The custom of sending greeting cards can be traced back to the ancient Chinese, who exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year, and to the early Egyptians, who conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls. By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have printed New Year’s greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and handmade paper Valentines were being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s. The first known published Christmas card appeared in London in 1843, when Sir Henry Cole hired artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card featuring his family celebrating together that he could send to his friends and acquaintances.

Allegedly the depiction of a family drinking wine together was controversial. For shame!

Today printed Christmas, Hanukkah and New Years’ cards are still widely mailed despite an early 2000s movement among some to send e-cards. Every year since 1953, White House has commissioned an official holiday card from a prominent American artist.

The 2013 Official White House Holiday Card was designed by Chris Hankinson and featured a pop-up White House complete with first dogs, Sunny and Bo.

Many businesses from small to large send commercial holiday cards to their customers and colleagues, and there is an uptick in charity organizations like Unicef using holiday cards as a fundraising tool. Of course, individuals and families also send cards for good cheer and to share photos or yearly updates with their loved ones. There’s just something about receiving a physical greeting in the mail…

We think it only just started being October, but the Holiday Card orders are coming in! We are pleased to be offering several designs, ranging from our screen printed Neon series to our fun Plaid series, which is printed on shimmering silver-flecked paper. So far, the most popular series this year is proving to be our fun Scratch 'N Sniff series, which currently features hot chocolate, pine and candy cane scented cards.

Sold in single design packs of 8, or multipacks of 12 you can find all our holiday cards online in our Etsy shop, or check out our new shoppe on Scoutmob, who hand-picked our scented series to feature on their site this season.

We plan to have some fun extending this series in the coming week, and also add a new line to our overall Holiday Collection. Be on the lookout!

It's been quite awhile since we posted a new color palette! Emily and I have decided to make this feature on our blog a shout out to our fellow Etsy creatives who we think are awesome. First up are these hand-felted yarn pom pom flowers.

 Felted Flowers by Berry Island

Back in our days at Syracuse, Emily and I not only roomed together and took all of the same classes in our design major, but we also tried to take at least one elective together each semester as well, especially if it meant working with our hands (and NOT our computers). These little pom poms bring back fond memories of Fibers 101, were we learned to make felt from scratch, knit, crochet, macrame you name it. Perhaps there's some felting in our future?
