As the year winds down, we are thrilled to share some wedding photos by photographer Carlie Statsky which were recently featured on Style Me Pretty. Renée and Michael were our first clients to get hitched in 2014 and they hired us to design a custom stationery suite for their event. We had a lot of fun coming up with ways to integrate their romantic, elegant aesthetic with a rustic setting and personalized details like the Claddagh ring and monogram. Their venue, Holman Ranch is nestled in bucolic Carmel Valley, California surrounded by wineries and studded with ancient oak trees. All of these elements were brought into the suite which came to life in a palette of soft blushes, peach, navy, gray and cream.

The Seating Chart directing guests to their assigned tables. We have seen a huge uptick in orders for these as an alternative to individual Escort Cards – they are practical for outdoor weddings and more affordable for larger guest lists. Plus they are a fun way to tie the wedding “brand” into some printed signage. Photo by Carlie Statsky.

Congratulations Renée and Mike!

The custom of sending greeting cards can be traced back to the ancient Chinese, who exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year, and to the early Egyptians, who conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls. By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have printed New Year’s greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and handmade paper Valentines were being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s. The first known published Christmas card appeared in London in 1843, when Sir Henry Cole hired artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card featuring his family celebrating together that he could send to his friends and acquaintances.

Allegedly the depiction of a family drinking wine together was controversial. For shame!

Today printed Christmas, Hanukkah and New Years’ cards are still widely mailed despite an early 2000s movement among some to send e-cards. Every year since 1953, White House has commissioned an official holiday card from a prominent American artist.

The 2013 Official White House Holiday Card was designed by Chris Hankinson and featured a pop-up White House complete with first dogs, Sunny and Bo.

Many businesses from small to large send commercial holiday cards to their customers and colleagues, and there is an uptick in charity organizations like Unicef using holiday cards as a fundraising tool. Of course, individuals and families also send cards for good cheer and to share photos or yearly updates with their loved ones. There’s just something about receiving a physical greeting in the mail…
